As the study of cycles indicates they are a great indicator and even predictor of when change on either a small or large scale tends to occur. For example we are at the end of a 500 year cycle. Looking back 500 years we see great technological, economic, social and scientific change. The telescope, the printing press, new philosophies, wars and religious changes created great upheaval in Europe. We see similar kinds of changes today - in technology (AI), politics (growing populism), economics (tariff and trade changes) and social changes (competing views of government centralization versus individual rights). Regardless of where one stands on these issues they all have an impact on individuals and society as a whole. For individuals it mostly means trying to factor in rapid changes and the uncertainty they bring in order to make decisions and at the speed with which things change this is increasingly difficult.
It can be easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless and to see only the negative side of things. There are a few things you can do to help manage this:
1) slow down your thinking and reactions to things, take a few seconds of moments to pause and consider what is happening,
2) step back to see things more objectively,
3) with more objectivity you can determine just how much an event affects you, if at all,
4) you can respond instead of react which means your actions and behaviors are more deliberate and calculated guaranteeing a higher likelihood of success,
5) spend more time focusing on local things and building community.
Doing these things will keep you grounded and focused on what's really important and keep you from being swept up in the next sudden event. When times change significantly as they sometimes do we need to make bigger changes and change is scary for most people. Just remember not only is change necessary for us to grow, it presents opportunities for us to create our own change so that we have more control in determining the direction we want our lives to go and having the outcomes we truly desire.
